Calvary and Emmaus
We need to be able to reconcile the chaotic, imminent disasters around us, and the moments of peace that descend like the dew fall. Calvary and Emmaus exist simultaneously, where all is lost and even more is gained in the aftermath. God’s design remains a mystery to us, but His will does not. We might sometimes pretend that His will is obscured, impenetrable; but in truth, I think this is rarely true. We are the ones that obfuscate. Neglect. Deny. He never does. We find His will writ large in the gradations of fate and folly. We find it in in liturgy, silence and prayer. We find it on Calvary. We find it on the road to Emmaus.
